I returned from my duty travel from Geneva a few days ago and would like to share this incident with you.

It seems that Geneva railway stations have become the haunt of pickpockets. Our Colleague Dr. Tommaso had narrated, to some of us in the cafeteria a couple of months ago, an incident as to how his pocket was picked at the Geneva central station. I am sharing this incidence so that none of us ends up losing their valuables at the Geneva station. I also would like to thank Tommaso since his narration / forewarning helped me. I, remembering the incident, had decided to wear the long jacket to provide an extra cover to my hind pockets. (But I think it is best to NOT keep the purse in the hind pockets).

Here is the incident. I do not think that I am reading too much into the sequence of events but you are free to interpret / utilize it which ever way you would want to.

I flew into Geneva airport and decided to take the train from the airport to Geneva central to reach the Hotel. I, wearing my long over jacket, along with my three pieces of luggage, quickly reached platform 3 to catch the next available train to Geneva Central. I was hurrying into the compartment as there was little time left for the departure, when I found three ‘helpful’ people appear from nowhere and crowd around me and graciously help me with my luggage into the compartment and board along with me through the same door. Mind you – many other compartment doors were free and they could have boarded from any of those –of the same or nearby compartments. There was not a soul at ANY of the other gates!

And suddenly / very quickly I turned to thank (My polite self!) the ‘gentlemen’ and I felt a hand being taken away / brushing past my right hind pocket (that time unconscious – but later on starkly clear!) that had my purse (USD 2000+). I smiled at and thanked the gentleman – one of them a boy of 18 with a confused / scared look on his face – and proceeded to sit on the very first seat. There were hardly 3-4 seats taken in the compartment.

And then, within a few seconds, I was reminded of the details – very similar to this -which Tommaso had narrated to us in the cafeteria – how he was hurrying into the train, how people came to help him with his luggage, and how some time later he discovered that his purse containing numerous documents and big money was missing. The empty station through which I was boarding, sudden appearance of three gentlemen crowding around me near the same door when other doors were free, the hand brushing my hind pocket, the confused /scared look on the boy’s face, all ran through my mind in a jiffy. I checked my pocket and was relieved to find the familiar bulge still present! I raised my eyes to spot the gentlemen – and NONE of them were present in the compartment. Within 30 seconds they had moved out of a nearly empty compartment! Why? Maybe to ‘help’ someone else.

My purse survived maybe due to a combination of factors, but I realize that it was vulnerably placed! This is hoping that when colleagues reach Geneva – jet lagged, tired and disoriented, – their documents and hard earned money are placed safely.

All the best fellow travelers!
