Taking the Earth’s Magnetic Pulse

Most folks think about the earth’s magnetism only when they need to find their way in the wilderness. When we look at a compass, the earth’s magnetic field appears to be a steady guide. But in reality the magnetic field is anything but stable. Ephemeral undulations, called micro-pulsations, ripple about the ionosphere and generate magnetic disturbances that reach down to ground level. Although they are common and sometimes last from seconds to minutes, these magnetic disturbances are hard to detect, having barely one ten-thousandth the strength of the earth’s average magnetism.

REFLECTED BEAM from this laser pointer will oscillate visibly when the earth’s magnetic field in the horizontal direction varies by even a tiny amount-as it will when ionospheric storms create magnetic micro-pulsations. To investigate the field’s vertical component the equipment must be mounted with the magnets parallel to the ground. (Note: In this diagram the plane of the nulling magnets, which should be parallel to the plane that the penny lies in, has been rotated slightly to provide a better view of the equipment.)

С огромной болью… даже трудно слова подобрать! узнал о смерти с большой буквы РАДИОЛЮБИТЕЛЯ – ЩЕЛЧКОВА ГЕРМАНА МИХАЙЛОВИЧА, моего наставника и просто старшего друга, познакомился с ним в 76 году, когда он обеспечивал экспедицию Шпаро в Восточной Арктике, когда я был только начинающим радиолюбителем на острове Врангеля… очень и очень многому он меня научил! во всех отпусках в 80-90 годах старался к нему заезжать в Видное на UK3A. Выражаю свои соболезнования его семье и близким. Ушла часть радиолюбительской истории СССР и России.

От себя добавлю. Знал Германа лично, но очень давно с ним не виделся. Так получилось, но крайний раз общался с ним кажется в середине 90х, будучи на UK3A вместе с Юрой UA0KCL.
Очень жаль. Уходит поколение радиолюбителей, которым было что сказть нынешнему поколению. Люди, до конца преданные своему увлечению и пронесших это хобби через всю свою жизнь. Для многих из них радио стало компасом в их дальнейшей судьбе.

Ukrainian DXpeditioners Team (UDXT) is very glad to present our new project – PACIFIC ODYSSEY 2010. UDXT members, namely: Sergey /UX0HX, Team Leader/, Oleg /RK3FA/, Alex /UT5UY/, Yuriy /UT1HF/,Oleg /US7UX/, Leo /UR3HR/ and Yuriy Grushevskiy /SWL/ will be active on all bands , all modes as:

- 5W0OX, Samoa (CQ – 32; ITU – 62; IOTA OC – 097) 18 May – 19 May 2010
- T31X, Central Kiribati (CQ – 31; ITU – 62; IOTA OC – 043) 22 May – 1 June 2010
- ZK3X, Tokelau (CQ – 31; ITU – 62; IOTA OC – 048) 2 June – 6 June 2010

The main mission of this DXpedition is activating T31 Central Kiribati, Kanton Island, Phoenix Islands Group. This DXCC entity is ranked #7 in EU and #19 in Worlds Most Wanted List. The next goal is activating ZK3 Tokelau Islands, which is ranked #29 in EU and #35 in Worlds Most Wanted List. The running of the DXpedition to remote Pacific Islands is always very expensive. The New ARRL Web Site Delayed to “Get it Right” – !! A new President for the ARRL, Kay Craigie N3KN.

After meeting with ARRL staff on February 23, two days before the new ARRL Web site was to launch, ARRL Chief Operating Officer Harold Kramer, WJ1B, made the decision to delay the unveiling of the Web site until late March. – The current delay is necessary to assure that we have all of the data connections correct.

The new Web site — which will contain the online store, class registrations, audio, video, DXCC information, contest data, individualized member options and other 21st century opportunities for members — is one of the largest technology upgrade activities that ARRL and Fathom, the company programming the site, have ever undertaken. -

AMSAT Statement

While many in North America were fast asleep Monday morning, March 1, the AMSAT-OSCAR 51 satellite had a potentially dangerous encounter with another spacecraft known as Formosat 3D. OSCAR 51 is a popular Amateur Radio satellite that often functions as a crossband FM repeater, relaying brief conversations over hundreds of miles. Formosat 3D is part of a constellation of six remote sensing microsatellites that collect atmospheric data for weather prediction and for ionosphere, climate and gravity research. Both orbit at an altitude of approximately 500 miles.
