About the BOBs

The Deutsche Welle International Blog Awards – The BOBs – honors websites in 11 languages that champion the open exchange of ideas and freedom of expression. Blog were just beginning to establish themselves as a new type of media and the BOBs aimed to show that this new form of communication was worthy of being taken seriously. The BOBs represent one of the “Deutshe Welle” ongoing efforts to contribute to promoting freedom of expression and the upholding of human rights around the world.

In 2005, while serving in Afghanistan, I was maintaining a blog called “Planet Afghanistan” within a framework of “LiveJournal.com” (“BOB’s List winners). As blog owner, was nominated for Jury Award and Audience Award of international blogs competition “The BOB“, which is conducted yearly by “Deutsche Welle“.

As a result, I won this competition in both nominations and my blog was recognized as the best journalist blog of 2005 in Russian Language.

The ARRL International Humanitarian Award: Andrey Fedorov, KL1A/RW3AH, was named this year’s (2011) recipient of the ARRL International Humanitarian Award. Federov is the former Chief Coordinator of the Russian Amateur Radio Emergency Service (RARES) and has been involved in providing communications support via Amateur Radio for almost 25 years. He has also served in Rwanda, Turkey and Kosovo as an Emergency Rescue Service Officer, and as a Regional Communications Officer for the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Afghanistan.

The ARRL International Humanitarian Award is conferred upon an amateur or amateurs who demonstrate devotion to human welfare, peace and international understanding through Amateur Radio. The ARRL established the annual prize to recognize Amateur Radio operators who have used ham radio to provide extraordinary service to others in times of crisis or disaster.
