{"id":27390,"date":"2011-10-02T17:33:06","date_gmt":"2011-10-02T16:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cqdx.ru\/ham\/?p=27390"},"modified":"2023-09-24T16:11:11","modified_gmt":"2023-09-24T16:11:11","slug":"bbs-news-belgian-radio-enthusiasts-make-rockfall-on-rockall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cqdx.ru\/ham\/ham-radio-news\/bbs-news-belgian-radio-enthusiasts-make-rockfall-on-rockall\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC Report: Belgian radio enthusiasts make rockfall on Rockall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cqdx.ru\/ham\/ham_radio\/bbs-news-belgian-radio-enthusiasts-make-rockfall-on-rockall\/attachment\/rockall-picture\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27391\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27391\" title=\"Rockall-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cqdx.ru\/ham\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Rockall-picture.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cqdx.ru\/ham\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Rockall-picture.jpg 567w, https:\/\/www.cqdx.ru\/ham\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Rockall-picture-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Belgian radio enthusiasts have succeeding in their attempt to broadcast from the remote North Atlantic islet of Rockall.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The volcanic rock is 100ft wide and 70ft high and a 250-mile boat trip from Stornoway on the Western Isles.<\/p>\n<p>The group had been trying to get onto Rockall for much of the week but were defeated by high winds and huge seas.<\/p>\n<p>Two made it onto the rock on Saturday and were transmitting overnight using amateur radio equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The UK annexed Rockall in 1955, but its ownership is disputed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;We have landed!&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the week the Rockall 2011 Belgian Expedition crew making the attempt were so seasick they withdrew to St Kilda to recover.<\/p>\n<p>But with conditions improving on Saturday they said team member Patrick Godderie managed to secure a line to the rock, clamber ashore and reach the top of Rockall.<\/p>\n<p>Another of the seven man team also made it onto the rock.<\/p>\n<p>A message on the group&#8217;s website said: &#8220;We have landed!! Patrick, ON4HIL is the first to land on Rockall!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After setting up their equipment the pair began transmitting overnight. They returned to their vessel on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The expedition is part of a programme called Islands On The Air (Iota) where radio hams try to log contacts with remote locations.<\/p>\n<p>In the past Ireland, Iceland and Denmark have lain claim to the rock and to the possible oil and gas reserves surrounding it.<\/p>\n<p>Ownership is now being examined by the United Nations in the light of competing claims from Iceland, the Faroes and Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest recorded landing on Rockall was believed to be in 1810, by an officer called Basil Hall from the HMS Endymion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-15136783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\">BBC News<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Belgian radio enthusiasts have succeeding in their attempt to broadcast from the remote North Atlantic islet of Rockall.
