The term YL was coined in 1920 by the American Radio Relay League for young ladies of all ages, as &#8220;OM will not fit and OL would certainly be most inapplicable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first known North American YL operators include Miss M. S. Colville, XDD, of Bowmanville, Ontario in 1914 and Emma Chandler of St. Mary&#8217;s, Ohio (8NH, W8NH) in 1915. The first women to be licensed as radio amateurs in the United Kingdom were Barbara Dunn G6YL and Nelly Corry G2YL in the early 1930&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Young Ladies&#8217; Radio League, a US-based group created expressly for women in amateur radio, was established in 1939 with membership both in North America and worldwide. The CW abbreviation &#8220;33&#8221;, which means &#8220;love sealed with friendship and mutual respect between one YL and another YL&#8221;, was coined by Clara Reger, W2RUF and adopted officially by YLRL in 1940. The first YLRL convention was held in Santa Monica, CA on June 24-25, 1955.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During WW2 Canadian women served as wireless operators aboard the Norwegian merchant navy as they were prohibited from serving in this position aboard Canadian merchant ships in that era.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A poem about the origin of the YL 33, &#8220;Birth of the Thirty-Three&#8221;, was written in honour of Clara Reger and her accomplishments both in the establishment of the YLRL and her longtime efforts to teach Morse code to new operators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>(From Margaret Dunn, KC7LXS, who got it from Terrie, AB7PX &#8211; original author is unknown.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Clara had her ticket<br \/>\nShe also had a rig<br \/>\nBecause she was just startin<br \/>\nIt wasn\u2019t very big.<br \/>\nShe slowly tuned the crystal,<br \/>\nAnd watched the meter drop.<br \/>\nThen tapped the key a couple times<br \/>\nTo be sure it wouldn\u2019t stop.<br \/>\nNow everything was ready.<br \/>\nShe called a short CQ<br \/>\nAnd received an answer<br \/>\nOn thirty-six sixty-two.<br \/>\nThey chewed the fat \u2018bout stuff and things.<br \/>\n\u2018bout dresses, work and dates.<br \/>\nThey finally called it QRT<br \/>\nThe girl sent eighty-eights.<br \/>\nClara thought it might funny<br \/>\nWhether it be Miss. or Mrs.<br \/>\nTo end a perfect QSO<br \/>\nBy sending \u201cLove and Kisses\u201d<br \/>\nIt sounds too sentimental;<br \/>\nJust a little too much \u201cgoo\u201d<br \/>\nTo be sending \u201cLove and Kisses\u201d<br \/>\nTo a girl the same as you.<br \/>\nFor an entire week she pondered;<br \/>\nWouldn\u2019t even touch the rig.<br \/>\nShe pushed her slide rule by the hour,<br \/>\nEmploying \u201clogs\u201d and \u201ctrig\u201d.<br \/>\nShe added and subtracted.<br \/>\nWhat could the answer be?<br \/>\nTo reach a happy medium<br \/>\nTwixt eighty-eight and seventy-three.<br \/>\nClara finally looked up from her work<br \/>\nAll smiles and not forlorn.<br \/>\nTwas July in Nineteen Forty<br \/>\nThat thirty-three was born.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s no real definition<br \/>\nBut it\u2019s meaning is known well.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s how a YL says good evening<br \/>\nTo another friend YL.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>XE0YL Story Another Sexy QSL cards Collection from HAMGallery.com YL&#8217;s in HAM Radio In landline railroad telegraphy, operators traditionally had referred to each other as OM (&#8220;old man&#8221;).
