[Photo courtesy of The Discovery Channel]<\/p><\/div>National Geographic Society Vice President for Research, Conservation and Exploration John Francis <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/tim-samaras-2-other-storm-chasers-killed-in-oklahoma-colleagues-mourn\/2013\/06\/03\/6424851e-cc46-11e2-8845-d970ccb04497_story.html\"><strong>told<\/strong><\/a> <em>The Washington Post<\/em> that he fears that there are too many people jamming the roadways in pursuit of twisters and that this might have contributed to Friday\u2019s fatalities. In a May 2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2013\/06\/130602-tim-samaras-dead-storm-chaser-tornadoes-last-interview-weather\/\"><strong>online interview<\/strong><\/a> with <em>National Geographic<\/em>, Samaras told of the increase in the number of storm chasers in recent years. \u201cThere\u2019s lots and lots of storm chasers out there, but you can probably count on one hand the number of people who go out into the field and collect data from tornadoes,\u201d he said. \u201cWe run into [storm chasers] all the time. On a big tornado day in Oklahoma, you can have hundreds of storm chasers lined up down the road. Oklahoma is considered the Mecca of storm chasing. We know ahead of time when we chase in Oklahoma, there\u2019s going to be a traffic jam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Samarases and Young were with <a href=\"http:\/\/twistex.org\/site\/?page_id=2\"><strong>TWISTEX<\/strong><\/a> (Tactical Weather Instrumented Sampling in\/near Tornadoes EXperiment), a scientific field research program founded by Tim Samaras to \u201cbetter understand tornadogenesis, maintenance and decay processes and to gain insight and knowledge of the seldom sampled near-surface internal tornado environment.\u201d The TWISTEX team has been featured on The Discovery Channel\u2019s <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/dsc.discovery.com\/tv-shows\/storm-chasers\">Storm Chasers<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Tim Samaras holds the Guinness World Record for recording the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/3000\/greatest-pressure-drop-measured-in-a-tornado\"><strong>greatest pressure drop ever measured inside a tornado<\/strong><\/a> (100 millibars near Manchester, South Dakota on June 24, 2003) and is the only person to ever record video from inside a tornado.<\/p>\n<p>In his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.com\/tv\/personalities\/Tim-Samaras.html\"><strong>biography<\/strong><\/a> on The Weather Channel\u2019s website, Tim Samaras said that he used Amateur Radio equipment when he chased storms. \u201cBeing that we are on a scientific mission,\u201d he explained, \u201cwe carry about 8-10 probes, along with other weather instruments, cameras, laptops, GPS navigation, cellular telephone, ham radio equipment (I\u2019m a ham radio operator), first aid kit &#8212; in case we come across tornado victims (most of our crew is first aid trained), tools, winches, saws&#8230;well&#8230;the whole garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/blog\/JeffMasters\/comment.html?entrynum=2423\"><strong>Weather Underground blog<\/strong><\/a>, Jeff Masters discussed the confluence of factors that might have contributed to Friday\u2019s tragedy. \u201cTornadoes by their nature are unpredictable, and can change course unexpectedly, or pop up suddenly,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIt\u2019s particularly dangerous when a tornado is wrapped in rain, making it hard to see, or if a chaser is operating in a heavily populated area, where roads may suddenly become congested. All four of these conditions occurred Friday during the El Reno tornado.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>National Geographic Society Executive Vice President Terry Garcia said that the National Geographic Society <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2013\/06\/130602-tim-samaras-dead-storm-chaser-tornadoes-reno-oklahoma-tornado\/?source=hp_dl1_news_samaras_dies_20130603\"><strong>made 18 grants<\/strong><\/a> to Tim Samaras \u201cfor research over the years for field work like he was doing in Oklahoma at the time of his death, and he was one of our 2005 Emerging Explorers. Tim\u2019s research included creation of a special probe he would place in the path of a twister to measure data from inside the tornado.\u201d Tim Samaras\u2019 work on lightning was featured in the August 2012 issue of <em>National Geographic<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chase the most powerful storms on the planet,\u201d Tim Samaras said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thunderchase.com\/about\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/a> on his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thunderchase.com\/\"><strong>personal website<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cAll my life I\u2019ve been on a quest to figure out how these things worked. Tornadoes have represented the biggest challenge as they are very fleeting in nature and extremely difficult to pinpoint their proposed destruction\u2026At times I have mixed feelings about chasing these storms.
