I\u2019ve developed an involuntary twitch in my forehead. Every time I hear the superfluous \u201cS\u201d at the end of communication. You might be thinking \u201cOh Michelle, you are being silly \u2013 it\u2019s just an extra \u201cS\u201d what difference does it make?\u201d<\/p>\n

There is a HUGE divide between communication and communications. Saying there is not is like saying PEZ candy and dark chocolateNo S in Human Communcation are the same thing \u2013 they\u2019re both candy right?
\nThe difference between communication and communications<\/p>\n

CommunicationS is a system for transmitting information \u2013 think telephone, TV, fiber optics. Communications is technology. Your cable guy \u2013 he\u2019s a communications professional.<\/p>\n

Communication involves individuals exchanging messages. Communication is human. It\u2019s people. Communication is connection. It\u2019s soulful. It\u2019s what we do every single day.<\/p>\n

I had a recent altercation with a well-known \u201ccommunications expert\u201d (his S not mine) on Forbes. He wrote an article about the key to leadership is communications. After reading the article, I knew he wasn\u2019t discussing communications technology. He was talking about human interaction.<\/p>\n

I felt the twitch and left a comment.<\/p>\n

He told me \u201cAlas, the people use communications. I\u2019m with the people.\u201d He also threw in the word pedantic. Two problems with this:<\/p>\n

1. If you claim to speak the language of the people, you can\u2019t use words like \u201cpedantic\u201d or \u201calas\u201d that just makes you look like an ass.<\/p>\n

2. If you are an expert and sell your services as a communication coach, you should know the difference. If you\u2019re an authority, people learn from you. You are the conduit of correct information. Using the word that is at the core of your business incorrectly hurts your credibility.<\/p>\n

Bottom line: Buyer beware \u2013 if you\u2019re reading an article or considering a hiring a coach and you see the extra \u201cS,\u201d keep looking unless you need your TV or telephone fixed.<\/p>\n
