The day is marked by the commission of <a title=\"Hoax\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hoax\">hoaxes<\/a> and other <a title=\"Practical joke\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Practical_joke\">practical jokes<\/a> of varying sophistication on <a title=\"Friendship\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Friendship\">friends<\/a>, <a title=\"Kinship\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kinship\">family members<\/a>, <a title=\"Rival\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rival\">enemies<\/a>, and <a title=\"Neighborhood\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neighborhood\">neighbors<\/a>, or sending them on a <a title=\"Snipe hunt\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snipe_hunt\">fool&#8217;s errand<\/a>, the aim of which is to <a title=\"Embarrassment\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Embarrassment\">embarrass<\/a> the <a title=\"Credulity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Credulity\">gullible<\/a>. <a title=\"Tradition\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tradition\">Traditionally<\/a>, in some countries, such as the UK, Australia, Canada and South Africa the jokes only last until noon, and someone who plays a trick after noon is called an &#8220;April Fool&#8221;.Elsewhere, such as in France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Russia, The Netherlands, Brazil, and the U.S., the jokes last all day. The earliest recorded association between April 1 and foolishness can be found in <a title=\"Chaucer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chaucer\">Chaucer<\/a>&#8216;s <em><a title=\"Canterbury Tales\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canterbury_Tales\">Canterbury Tales<\/a><\/em> (1392).
