OVERVIEW:

The ACOM 500S Solid State 160 – 4 Meter Linear Amplifier is a state-of-the art RF power amplifier that cover all Amateur Radio bands from 1.8 through 70.5 MHz* with a power output of 500 Watts (PEP or digital). Its compact and lightweight construction is perfect for expeditions and field operations. The built-in switching-mode power supply (SMPS) operates with an extended mains voltage range of 100-240 VAC, with no internal switch over. The consumed current is purely sinusoidal, Power Factor Corrected (PFC) and in-rush limited, therefore operating the 500S with unstable mains and generators is easy and trouble-free.

* Operation on the 4 meter band, 70-70.5 MHz is only legal in certain countries in IARU Region 1, many in Europe, plus Greenland. Operation is not authorized on this band in most of IARU Region 2 including North, Central and South America. This amplifier may be sold for use in any part of the world. Legal operation is the responsibility of the user.

SPECIAL NOTE: Due to power efficiency, the use of 240 VAC service is highly recommended.

AOM-500S-240 is pre-wired and tested by DXE with a NEMA 6-15P USA plug for 240-volt operation.

AOM-500S-120 is pre-wired and tested by DXE with a NEMA 5-15P USA plug for 120-volt operation.

AOM-500S has No Plug or a Euro Plug and is not tested by DXE; order this model to wire your own AC plug for either voltage.

The overall operation of ACOM 500S is extremely user friendly and the simplified menus on the multi-functional, high resolution 5-inch color display are intuitive and easy to follow when changing frequency and bands. Amplifier control can be achieved by using either the 6 buttons conveniently located on the front panel or remotely over the internet with the optional ACOM eBox Remote Control Device (this functionality is currently in development). Complete automatic control of a transceiver with CAT capability* allows the amplifier to track the operating frequency and will change bands accordingly. When a CAT connection to the transceiver is not present, the amplifier will monitor the input signal frequency through the built-in frequency counter and will automatically switch bands.

The ACOM 500S is transceiver independent and fully compatible with all transceiver models available and requires less than 25W of RF power and a “ground on transmit” signal for operation. The 500S utilizes a rugged LDMOS transistor and a broadband input circuit presents an SWR below 1.5 to the transceiver without re-tuning throughout the entire frequency range from 1.8 to 70.5 MHz. Built-in intelligent protection circuits continually work in the background to keep your equipment safe. Detailed data about each of the last hard-fault protection trip is stored in the amplifiers non-volatile memory for easy maintenance. Built-in radio frequency filters exceed EMC requirements by providing electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) with highly sensitive devices typically found in the shack such as receivers, computers and other amplifiers.

NOTE: Compatible ACOM 04AT or 06AT Antenna Tuners are powered and controlled only by an ACOM Solid State Amplifier. Automatic operation of these tuners requires exact frequency information (not band data) from a CAT or COM (RS-232) or CI-V capable transceiver via a custom built Transceiver to Amplifier Interface Cable. The required frequency data interface cable may be user built (CAT/AUX connection instructions from ACOM) or purchased as an optional accessory from DX Engineering for applicable transceivers.

ACOM 500S Solid State 160 – 4 Meter Amplifiers are among the finest modern linear amplifiers available anywhere in the world.

  • Additional Features and Specifications:
  • Frequency Coverage: All Amateur Radio bands from 1.8 – 70.5 MHz* (see note above)
  • Rated Output Power: 500W PEP or Digital, ±0.5 dB
  • Intermodulation Distortion (IMD3): Better than 30 dB below rated PEP
  • Harmonic and Parasitic Emissions Output Suppression:
  • Below 30 MHz – better than 50 dBc below rated output
  • Above 30 MHz – better than 70 dBc below rated output
  • Input Impedances
  • Nominal value: 50 Ohm unbalanced
  • SWR: Below 1.5 (1.2 typically), 1.8-70.5 MHz continuous range
  • RF bypass: SWR – below 1.1, 1.8-70.5 MHz
  • Antenna Impedance: Nominal value: 50 Ohm unbalanced

Two antenna outputs available:

RF OUTPUT 1: Output provides seamless integration with the auto-switching antenna tuners ACOM 04AT or ACOM 06AT, for access from amplifier’s front panel to 4 antennas having an SWR up to 3, within 160-to-4-meter bands.

RF OUTPUT 2: A well-matched antenna with an SWR below 1.5 can be connected to this output for any band. While low SWR is good for any band, it is extremely important on 6 and 4 m. RF OUTPUT 2 is not intended for ACOM 04AT or ACOM 06AT antenna tuners.
